About the Program
If you’re an artist looking for time, space, and international exposure to develop your creative work, this is an opportunity worth your attention. Applications are open for the Japan TOKAS International Creators Program 2027 — a fully funded residency organized by Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS). It invites international artists, designers, architects, and creative professionals to spend three months in Tokyo developing their projects.
The residency runs across selected periods between May 2027 and March 2028. There is no application fee, and all major costs are covered.
Three Residency Tracks
🎨 International Creator
For creators in visual art, film, design, and architecture to live and work in Tokyo.
🖼 Curator Residency
For professionals in curation, art criticism, and cultural research.
🔍 Research Residency
For research on arts & culture in Tokyo — open to international and local creators.

Eligible Creative Fields
📋 Who Can Apply?
- Open to candidates from all countries worldwide.
- International Creator: resides outside Japan, 5+ years of experience, sufficient English. Duo applications accepted if at least one creator resides outside Japan.
- Curator: resides outside Japan, 3+ years of experience, sufficient English. Duo applications not accepted.
- Research: open to international and local creators with a strong research proposal.
- Students are generally ineligible, except Ph.D. candidates.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an application fee?
No. The TOKAS International Creators Program has no application fee, and selected participants receive airfare, accommodation, a studio, a daily allowance, and a project grant.
Can students apply?
Students are generally not eligible. The exception is Ph.D. candidates, who may apply across the residency tracks.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. Applicants need sufficient English communication skills. The residency is designed for international creators.
How long is the residency and when does it take place?
It lasts three months. You can choose one period: May–July 2027, September–November 2027, or January–March 2028.
Can two creators apply together?
Duo applications are accepted for the International Creator track if at least one creator resides outside Japan. The Curator track does not accept duo applications.
